Body balance is crucial for daily mobility, preventing falls, and enhancing physical performance. Good balance boosts efficiency, strengthens core muscles, reduces joint strain, and improves reaction times and coordination. Balance is a learned skill that can be trained and improved at any age, similar to building muscle.
Balance in yoga is gained by integrating physical, mental, and spatial awareness through proper alignment, core engagement, and focused gaze (drishti). It is built by establishing a strong, active foundation (rooting down), building core stability, using steady breath, and practicing patience, which improves proprioception and strengthens stabilizing muscles around the joints.
Balance and mobility work together as the foundation for independent movement, where mobility (the ability to move freely) relies on balance (control of body position) to remain stable.
If these topics appeal to you try our COR Yoga+ Strength & Flexibility class. This yoga class blends dynamic poses that boost muscle strength with deep stretches to expand your range of motion. The balanced approach improves mobility and stability, lowers the chance of injury, and supports functional movement by syncing your breath with each movement. It helps build both physical resilience and mental focus. Classes are available in both our SŌLIS (heated) and AŪRA (non-heated) rooms.
